Really nice presentation on 4 March given by Christopher C.M. Lee “Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand: The Systematization of Architectural Knowledge and Procedural Differentiation” for the PHD program, the lecturer argue the idea of Durand’s typology in two process, one is classify and simplify the structure of building in to type, and in term of the logic of type, can be developed to typology. The second process imply the understanding of each element and class of building could be transfer from word to grammar by syntactic for architectural design use.
It also become a process from geometry to space, through simplify the building into simple geometry composition can be also turn back from geometry to architecture. Somehow it might have some relevant issue to the history and theory seminar this semester: Plan and platitudes.
